Nutro is Worth it!

NOTE: THIS IS NOT A PAID ADVERTISMENT

Last summer I was at a local dog show event and I met a rep for Nutro Dog Food. I had been feeding the boys Science Diet but heard that Nutro guarantees some of their food products will help reduce shedding and improve the condition of their skin. I talked a bit with the rep and he gave me some samples.

The rep explained that the linoleic acid in the food was the key ingredient in regards to skin and fur condition. He also explained how many dog foods (not Nutro though) use cornmeal and chicken byproducts, which is stuff left over after the meat is stripped from the bone – heads, feet, intestines, etc.–GROSS! So the next time I went to the store I checked the ingredients on several types of foods. Sure enough, cornmeal and byproducts were commonly the first items listed. Disgusting!

The Nutro rep said you could tell a difference in the first month of feeding your dog(s) their food and the prices weren’t any different from Science Diet so I figured I’d give it a shot. I selected the Natural Choice dog food, which is the best for improving their skin and fur. The boys took to the food really well, though they’re usually not too picky. I can’t say I noticed a whole lot of improvement in the first month but I continued to feed them the same kind anyway since they seemed to like it.

It’s been several months now and I’ve gone through a few big bags of the food. I gave the boys a bath yesterday and I realized what a significant improvement the food has made with my oldest pug, Max. Max’s coat has always been pretty rough and Putter’s coat has always been relatively soft. The vet noticed an improvement in their coats when I switched from store brand food to the Science Diet, and I could tell somewhat, but Max’s fur was still rather rough. I’ve not had them in since I’ve switched to Nutro but I can honestly say it has made a HUGE difference for Max.

I can’t say how much the shedding has improved for sure because now that they have their pimped out doggie house they are outside more than they are in our house. But, I will say when playing with them lately and when giving them a bath the other day I did not notice near as much excess fur all over the place. (Another added benefit is that they don’t poop as much as they did with other brands of food.)

I’m pretty excited about this discovery. Nutro is not super expensive, and the rep told me that they don’t advertise much to help keep their costs low, but I do wish they would offer coupons or put their products on sale more frequently. After seeing such positive results I’m more than happy to shell out a few more bucks to improve the quality of my boys’ life.  I’d highly recommend this brand of food but urge you to keep at it for a few months before deciding just how much it has improved the condition of your pet’s skin and coat.
